Built around AD1100, the octagonal Yingxian Muta (Yingxian Pagoda) is thought to be the oldest wooden building in China. Reflecting the dangers of the bad old days in Shanxi, it Shanxi, it began life as a watchtower and waited 400 years before being converted into a temple. In something of an architectural trick, the pagoda's 220 ft appear to contain five floors but in fact holds nine.
